Star Trails over Shinnecock Bay

From the sleepy town of Orient at the Eastern tip of the North Fork on a calm night looking across Gardiners Bay at Rams Head Shelter Island the Milky Way is reflected on the water.

The nape ague Stretch is a where Montauk Highway stretches from Amagansett to Montauk. The road goes through the dunes of the East End of Long Island before reaching the hip fishing town of Montauk. On the top of the dunes is an overlook popular for viewing sunsets, but on dark nights the Milky Way makes itself known.

When I got out last week to check out the Milky Way I returned to Mecox Bay. I was there in the winter and created an image of the bay in winter with the night sky. Well six months later and it is an entirely different t scene. Scroll down to see the differences

This past week I got a chance to get out at night and take this photo of the Milky Way over a Farm in Wainscott, Long Island. There is a lot of light pollution in this area, but I tried to use it to make a more interesting photo than just the Milky Way against a black sky.

This past winter I spent a day hiking among the rocks on the Montauk Point shore. These rocks were deposited by the leading edge of advancing glaciers during the Ice Age. I photographed the rocks that seemed to have character of the their own.
